Extract from letter from Nursing Sister H.A.Lawrence, dated August

11th, 1915, employed at the Hong Kong Civil Hospital since October

1914. Still there:-

I am sorry to say thatI am neither settled down nor

happy in Hong Kong. Its natural surroundings are very beautiful,

but life and conditions at the Government Civil Hospital anything

but congenial, and there is no prospect of any improvement,

know, we have lost three good Sisters in Miss Astin, Miss Bone and

Kiss Craddock, and naturally, they would not have given up their

posts, and refunded their passare money, had they been quite happy

here. The feeling of dissatisfaction also prevails among more

Senior Members of the Staff. I am very undecided what to do, and

it is possible that I, too, may send in my resignation if I have

an opportunity of taking a patient home. It is not easy to e

continue nursing duties unless one is really happy in the work, and

this is the first time I have ever held a post where I have ex-

perienced this feeling. The want of loyalty in the Medical

Department is very marked, and the tone bad......"
